How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the here PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter here is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). 4. ECU

You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
